What to see in Sassari: art, history and mystery IN Sardinia

Four unmissable stops to discover the cultural side of the north of the island

Duomo di Sassari

Cattedrale di San Nicola

The spiritual and architectural heart of the city, St. Nicholas Cathedral is a striking example of a fusion between Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance styles.

The spectacular light stone façade overlooks the square with an elegance that encapsulates centuries of history. Inside, imposing naves, sculpted altars and precious frescoes testify to Sassari’s central role in the island’s religious landscape. A visit that moves the soul, if only for its silent and intimate light.

Museo Nazionale G.A. Sanna

One of Sardinia’s most important archaeological museums, the Sanna Museum houses a vast and fascinating collection spanning from the Neolithic to the Roman era. Statues, jewellery, ceramics, steles and tools recount the daily life of the ancient civilisations that inhabited the island.

It is the ideal place to understand the historical depth of Sardinia, observing authentic artefacts in a sober and evocative setting.

Pinacoteca Nazionale di Sassari

Housed in the University Building, the Art Gallery offers a curated collection of works of art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, with a particular focus on Sardinian artists. Here you will find the pictorial history of the island, but also an insight into the evolution of artistic taste and sensibility.

Sacred paintings, bourgeois portraits, landscapes and still lifes coexist in an environment that invites contemplation and silence.

Monte d’Accoddi

A few kilometres from the city centre, nestled in the Sassari countryside, lies one of the most enigmatic places in the Mediterranean: Monte d’Accoddi.

This prehistoric altar, similar to a Mesopotamian ziggurat, is unique in Europe. Still shrouded in mystery today, it is believed to have been a place of worship dating back to the 4th millennium BC. Walking among these ancient stones, surrounded by nature, is an almost mystical experience, connecting you to Sardinia’s deepest and most archaic past.
